Patron : His Grace the Duke of Devonshire

The Swan Hotel, formerly known as The Shoulder of Mutton - first recorded in 1811. In 1850 a soldier was accused (apparently unjustly) of not paying for a drink and taken to a tree outside the cemetery and flogged. The 'regulars' were appalled by this act and boycotted the inn. In an attempt to dissociate the inn from this event the name was changed.
